The “baillis” in France during the Middle Ages was to put it in modern terms the “sherriff” who enforced the bylaws and statutes of the county, and issuing fines and prison terms for vagrants, thieves, and fraudsters, and collected taxes imposed by the king. The “de la Fontaine” family held this important civil role for some 200 years. After 1600 the role was taken up by the King’s centralized administration.

Il se trouva en qualité de Lieutenant-Général des armées du Roi Charles IX à la bataille de St. Denis ou il fut tué le 10 Novembre 1557.
