Variants of the Nickname Fontaine such as Fontenet, Fonteneau, and Fontan have maintained their popularity over time, especially after the French Revolution when the surnames of nobles and lords were less appreciated. Although the name "de la Fontaine" survived the Revolution and is found in areas near Paris the prefix "de la" was less common after 1810.
